I know the full history of this 2005 PRS Custom 22 Artist Pack that is loaded with alluring qualities – Originally I hand picked it for stock and subsequently sold it to a discerning customer, so I can vouch for it having had only one owner in the last 13 years or so – It might not be in as new, showroom condition, yet equally any light signs of use are minimal, so you’d have to be fairly pernickety to have any issues with it – Maybe the gold hardware is the biggest give away of previous use, in particular on the pick up covers, but we all know how quickly gold can fade, tarnish and wear – It has spent time on my bench for a new set of 10’s, along with a check up and set up, so that slick and easy action that PRS are renowned for is all present and correct – Complete with the deluxe leather bound case and appropriate tag – One key point I need to make regarding this 2005 PRS Artist Pack model, is that it is part of the 20th Anniversary range – As such, during this period Artist Pack models were spec’d and shipped with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard – Also note the lightly engraved ’20th’ truss rod cover – Final note concerns the weight and at 8lbs and 4oz then few will take exception to this
A remarkable and exhilarating quilted maple top, decked out in an alluring blue matteo finish, certainly has you licking your lips and yearning to find out more – It is laden with all of the those luxurious artist pack features – Just a quick re-cap on those artist pack features :- gold hardware, Brazilian rosewood headstock facia and fingerboard, paua bird inlays, paua inlayed signature logo, leather bound case and of course that spectacular ‘artist pack’ grade top – Of course PRS Guitars aren’t just about great looks, as that impeccable build quality, coupled with a legendary playing performance, ensures that this guitar possesses all the qualities that will inspire your own playing – The one piece mahogany neck has the popular wide/thin profile, so easy and comfortable to handle, which along with the 10″ fingerboard radius, plus 22 chunky frets, ensures a fluid playing action, coupled with effortless string bending – Neck profile is wide/thin and measures .835″ around the top nut end and gently fills out to .893″ around the 12th fret – So not ‘supa waif’ like, but just enough meat to be comfortable – The gold plated hardware includes a set of 14:1 ratio locking tuners, as well as the PRS designed modern fulcrum tremelo system, that not only feels very smooth and positive, but gives you trouble free tuning stability for all but extreme use – Note solid milled brass saddles and trem block, so no monkey metal on a PRS
Tonal character :- Sitting at the heart of the engine room, or should I say tone department, you’ll find a pair of PRS Dragon 11 humbuckers, that measure 8K in the neck position, whilst the bridge position kicks out a bit more at 12.25K – After a few minutes of test driving a Custom 22 through a good amp, you’ll soon notice both the quality of tone and versatility that is available to you, coupled with so much more emotional control and expression, which again will lift your playing performance to another level – The taper of the volume and tone controls ensures that they work smoothly across the full 1-10 range – On overdriven amp settings, as you roll off the volume pot, you can control the level and emotional content of gain that you require, from a blazing full on rock level, to a more subtle setting , even cleaning up to a chilled out blues tone, as required – Yet it still retain all its expressive qualities and character as you roll off the volume pot – On clean or overdriven amp settings, the tone is rich, warm and smooth, with plenty of depth and articulation – The bridge pick-up is voiced and wound a little hotter for increased bite and sustain, yet still retains those velvet smooth highs, whilst the neck pick-up has more than enough musical warmth to please jazz and blues fans – At first glance it may appear as though you just have the 3 regular humbucking tonal options available to you, but thanks to the 5 way rotary switch, those 3 humbucker voices are complimented with 2 very useful single coil flavoured settings for those funky disco style chops
