Brief background for this used Gibson Les Paul Standard, from 2007 –  The heart of the Gibson electric guitar range is undoubtedly the Les Paul Standard – Whilst the LP Standard has been ever present in the Gibson price list for around 50 years now, we have seen far to many changes to our favourite LP – Lately many  such changes appear to be for the sake of changes sake and pleasing a marketing team  – Yet due to various updates, the overall spec, plus a superior build quality, then LP Standard’s from the 2002 to 2007/8 period are becoming far more desirable – After this date Gibson introduced a number of changes that don’t appeal to the traditional player – Do we need to mention many such gimmicks to various models, post 2008 – Locking tuners, ‘locking’ jack socket, solderless pots on a PCB board, coil tap options, asymmetrical necks, compound radius fingerboard, along with a host of ‘unusual colours’  – Nothing wrong with such modern features, as I’m sure many players will approve of them – But in my view they are not features that traditional players will associate with a Les Paul Standard – As such, these LP’s should be called the Les Paul Modern, then continue with the features and spec they created during the 2002-2007/8 period for the LP Standard-  In that 5/6 year period Gibson scored a home run and got it right, so much so that without getting into the more expensive Custom Shop Reissue models, they are probably amongst the finest LP’s to be made over the last 50 years – To be fair to Gibson and post Henry, they now appear to be  back on course with regards to the spec and features of the LP Standard

Weight relief :- For over 40 years now, nearly all production LP’s have undergone some form of weight relief to the mahogany body – Original this was in the form of 9 ‘Swiss cheese’ style holes, mostly on the Low E side towards the tailpiece area – Around 2006/7 the ‘chambered’ body was introduced to the standard production models – More of a ‘swimming pool’ style routing, on the Low E side of the body and below the tailpiece area – Of course the plus side of such a process is a lighter guitar – This LP weighs in at 7lbs and 14oz – No such routing will ever please all the die hard LP fans, but equally for some it is a tick in the right box, both regards to weight and a more articulate tone

Key details of this Used Gibson Les Paul Standard L6+ with a heritage cherry sunburst finish :-

Tonal character :- Part of me says there is little point in chatting about the tone of an LP, as most/all of us are aware of how an LP sounds – Yet to be fair not all LP’s are equal and as such subtle variations to all LP’s, from the late 50’s up until today produce similar yet different results – Add to that, some players will favour the cleaner tones of Pete Green, whilst others will wish to add more gain and pile into various forms of heavy rock etc – As I mentioned earlier, when I wrote about weight relief, a chambered body will act more like a 335, albeit on a smaller scale – As such more articulation, hence less moody/muffled mids – For some players this will be an asset, especially those who favour far less gain or even a clean amp setting, or indeed rhythm players who require a good clean funky voice – As always it is what it is – The Burst Bucker Pro pick-ups are more on the softer paf/vintage side of life – The volume pots possess enough control to allow you to dial in levels of gain, as you move from around 6/7 to 10 – Hence plenty of expression is at your finger tips  – As an overview I’ve enjoyed my time evaluating, setting up and playing this LP and would certainly state that is possesses attributes that will suit many players
