#5922 – Gibson Les Paul Classic – cherry sunburst – used/2004
£1499

In the Gibson Guitar catalogue is there anything more iconic than an LP with a traditional sunburst gloss finish ? – This used Gibson Les Paul Classic from 2004, with a cherry sunburst gloss finish certainly ticks a lot of boxes for those looking for an LP that is loaded with traditional features
Additional comments in no particular order :-
- The 6 digit ink serial number starts 04, which confirms both the 1960 vibe of such a guitar and a date of birth as 2004
- Whole guitar weighs 9lbs and 12oz – For many years now it has been hard to categorically confirm which Les Paul has a solid mahogany body and which is chambered, as Gibson have tended to duck around with such policies on many occasions – I generally quote that if it is ultra light or heavy, you tend to detect that it is chambered, or indeed solid – It is always the models in between which represent the questionable grey area – So without any X-ray proof, I can’t confirm one way or another, but at nearly 10lbs I know which way I’m edging my bet
- Mahogany body on the Classic, with a 2 piece carved maple top, with just enough grain pattern + mineral streak to add character
- One piece mahogany neck – 60’s C profile, so a touch slimmer – Measures .834″ around the top nut end and .921″ around the 12th fret – So still a hint of meat on it but not a handful to play
- All original hardware, with a Nashville bridge assembly – Old school Kluzon Deluxe tuners with the vintage style push in ferrules, plus tulip buttons
- Includes the original hotter Gibson humbuckers – The neck measures 8.28K, whilst the bridge is more powerful at 14.37K
- The original scratchplate is engraved ‘1960’
- The truss rod cover is simply engraved ‘Classic’
- Amber bonnet control knobs + pointer ‘washer’
- Includes original Gibson TKL case
- Condition wise, then as an overview this is a clean guitar, especially when you take into account it is now around 18 years old – There is a small nick on the rim of the body, otherwise any slight graze to the top surface of the nitro gloss finish is subtle – It is not in that as ‘new/mint condition’ but certainly it does not look as though it has just finished a large tour with a punk band – No fret wear
- Re-strung with a set of 10-46 gauge strings then set-up with a nice fluid action
The LP Classic v The LP Standard – Effectively the same guitar, yet slightly different – A Classic is spec’d with a slightly slimmer mahogany neck, based on the early 1960 Les Paul’s – Note the headstock facia and you’ll find the script text denotes Les Paul Classic and not ‘Les Paul Model’ as per many other models – Note the engraved ‘Classic’ truss rod cover – A Classic is spec’d with a set of open coil humbuckers that are a touch hotter than those found on a Standard – Otherwise they can be considered a similar guitar – The neck pick-up is still fat and warm, but the bridge pick-up kicks out an extra ounce of power – So more screamin’ highs, yet still plenty of muscle in the mid range with tight lows – To a degree a Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul, yet subtle and effective variations will please one customer more than another – The Classic can still deliver you that fat vintage flavoured Clapton to Moore classic rock n blues tone, but as an overview it does tend to possess an extra ounce of bite – So maybe more pleasing to the player who wants a Les Paul that delivers an extra kick, maybe inspired by Slash – Horses for courses as they say
