There is something that might be un-explainable, as to why certain guitars just grab your attention, within a few seconds of that first viewing – This used PRS Custom 24, from 2000, with a colourful set of abalone bird inlays, is one such guitar – The gloss dark cherry sunburst finish has faded to give it some ‘old school’ mojo, whilst the figured maple top has character without looking OTT – Condition wise, then you’ll find a nick on the rim of the body, near the jack socket, otherwise this is a clean instrument – Any additional graze, or scuff to the top surface of the gloss finish is on the subtle side – For an instrument that is now around 21/22 years old then few would have any issue with me saying that this Custom 24 is a fairly clean instrument – No fret issues – As with all used guitars that I offer for sale, this PRS has spent time on my work bench to receive a new set of 10-46 gauge strings, along with a complete check-up and set-up, so a slick playing action awaits any prospective buyer – No tag but it does include an Artist Pack PRS hard shell case – So an ‘upgrade’ on the case compared to the regular case that is shipped with such a model – Whilst the original tag has gone missing sometime in the past, all the relevant data can be found on the bar code with what PRS call the ‘modcat code’ which can be found within the bridge pick-up cavity – Data includes the serial number + finish and CUM4F-HTIBT-DS, so no shortage of verification if required

Custom 24 performance characteristics

The selection of the finest ingredients, coupled with an impeccable attention to detail and build quality, are  key factors regarding how any USA model is built, to ensure that first class playing experience is part and parcel of every PRS Guitar  – This Custom 24 is spec’d with the wide/thin neck profile, to allow a fast and fluid playing action, throughout the length of the rosewood fingerboard, coupled with effortless string bending, thanks to a set of medium jumbo frets, that are impeccably fitted, profiled and polished to perfection –  The wide/thin profile is slimmer than your regular Gibson neck, yet still retains enough meat on its rear, to enrich the natural sustain and to let you know that you are still holding something of substance in the palm of your hand – Some guitar necks can be a challenge to play, but on a PRS you’ll find that even the most intricate passages of play, from your favourite licks, can simply flow from your fingertips – If you choose to utilise a tremelo system, then the PRS package possesses great tuning stability, for all but the most excessive of playing styles – The trem arm itself has a nice, smooth and positive feel about it, that allows for both up/down pitch movement

Tonal Character :-  In conjunction with the right amp, the Custom 24 has the ability to provide both warm and rich clean tones, from the PRS Vintage Bass neck humbucker, that are required for jazz/blues/fusion playing styles as well as clean funky/disco rhythm styles, through to full bodied, hot and clean tones, from the more powerful PRS HFS bridge humbucker, that are required for rock or country styles – Yet click on to subtle overdriven amp settings for those classic rock tones, or dial in some hi-gain filth from your amp for the tones adored by the modern contemporary guitarist, as this is the territory where the HFS humbucker comes into its own – HFS means Hot! Fat! and Screams! all delivered with great articulation – Due to the quality and taper of both the volume and tone pots on a Custom 24, you’ll find they work smoothly across the 1-10 spectrum, allowing you to control the volume, gain and tonal expression, that you may require from your amp, direct from the guitar – As you roll off the volume pot, you’ll notice that the tone does not go dull and mushy on you – It still retains its  articulation and expressive qualities – On more subtle overdriven amp settings, this allows you to clean up the amp, whilst on hi-gain amp settings the same policy allows you to reduce the gain level as required – Hence you have total control over the emotion required – The main strength of the Custom 24 is undoubtedly to provide 3 humbucking voices, via positions 1/3/5 on the 5 way rotary selector switch – However positions 2+ 4 deliver 2 funky single coil flavoured voices for additional variation  – Sure they don’t replicate the finest tones of a vintage pre-CBS Strat, but they are more than useful for those Chic style disco chops

You can own a number of different guitars, each capable of doing a specific job, yet the Custom 24, as one instrument alone, is maybe all that you require – It is not meant to be a ‘tone clone’ of either a Les Paul or a Strat, rather just a great playing instrument with good tonal options and just as original in its own right – The tonal expression possible from a PRS is down to you, the amp you chose to put it through and how you wish to play – A good instrument will enrich your playing style, not hinder it, allowing you to explore new avenues, with an increased tonal palate and that is what a PRS guitar can offer – Some companies spend all there time promoting and delivering vintage copies of guitar they made 20, 30 years ago, PRS just move and improve the boundaries, delivering a new classic instrument
