There is no debate whatsoever, regarding the fine aesthetic qualities of this PRS Hollowbody 11, with Artist Pack upgrades – Add the factory fitted PRS/LR Baggs piezo acoustic pick-up system and you have plenty of ingredients to entice a potential buyer – Note the highly figured one piece maple top, as well as a highly figured one piece back – Totally exquisite in a classic santana yellow gloss finish – It is a 2008 model and as such you’d probably expect to find the odd graze on the gloss finish – Wrong – It is about as clean as any used guitar could ever be – If it is not in ‘as new showroom condition’ then it is damn close, so only the most fussy of potential buyers would have any issue with its condition – Even the gold hardware shows little, if any, signs of wear – No fret wear whatsoever – Despite its ultra clean condition, it has still spent some time on my work bench, for a check-up, set-up and a new set of 10-52 gauge strings – Includes the original deluxe PRS case, with the appropriate modcat code label still on the case
The Artist Pack options include gold plated hardware, rosewood headstock facia + truss rod cover, exotic and very colourful paua bird inlays, plus paua inlays for the PRS headstock signature logo, then finally that delectable, one piece, artist pack graded flamed maple top and back – The body is constructed from a solid carved one piece maple top, plus a one piece maple back, with just a centre support block, under the wrapover bridge assembly, to give you a true semi acoustic instrument – So no 335 style laminates on this guitar – Weight watchers will adore the fact that it barely nudges 6lbs on my digital scales – The one piece mahogany neck is topped of with a dark + smooth rosewood fingerboard, that is impeccably graced with a set of paua bird inlays – Then add 22 highly polished and correctly profiled jumbo frets – Wide/fat C neck profile that measures .864″ around the top nut end and fills out to .956″ at the 12th fret (hence similar depth to Gibson 50’s profile) – Fitted with a complete set of gold plated hardware, including the ultra smooth PRS Phase 11 locking machine heads with a 14;1 ratio – Whilst the ebonised tuning buttons add a further touch of class to the overall package – The wrapover bridge/tailpiece is fitted with 6 adjustable bridge saddles, that also incorporates the LR Baggs piezo system (more on that later)
As with any PRS guitar the playing performance is outstanding, with a fluid, easy playing, action throughout the length of the fingerboard, that responds to a light touch – To any guitarist familiar with the old fashioned archtop jazz boxes, like an L5 or ES175, you’ll find this guitar just a pure pleasure to play – Yet to a regular guitarist, brought upon a solid body instrument, the Hollowbody 11 feels nice ‘n’ slick, just like any other PRS Guitar – Whilst the Hollowbody 11 will appeal to any jazz/blues or fusion based guitarist, or indeed any virtuoso style solo guitarist, it will more than hold its own for any musician gigging in a function band, or indeed a Top 40 style covers band – Think Wes Montgomery, Robben Ford, BB King, Larry Carlton or Steely Dan, to name a few and such environments will show the Hollowbody at its best – The Hollowbody 11 is spec’d with a pair of low output PRS McCarty Archtop humbuckers, as well as the LR Baggs patented piezo system, with individual string voicing and real acoustic modelling – As such the tonal options are vast and impressive – You have the option of running both the piezo and humbuckers down one regular guitar lead, into your existing amp set-up, if required – However to get the best out of the piezo system, it is suggested that you utilise a dedicated acoustic guitar amp, pa desk, or similar, with the humbuckers still plugged into your regular amp – Therefore you have two separate outputs, to allow you to take advantage of this option – I for one, would probably never have requested the piezo option as a must have item, that would sit at the top of my shopping list – Yet once you have played around with it, you quickly realise it has some great voicing’s, that will certainly enrich your performance – Think Django style Gypsy Jazz, Hotel California style intros, Who/Tom Petty style big acoustic chords – The humbuckers produce a full bodied, smooth and warm tone with good articulation and loads of rich natural harmonics – For a blues/rock player dabbling in jazz, or a jazz player dabbling in blues/rock, this has to be an instrument worth investigating, yet for a solo virtuoso guitarist it is a must have instrument
