Let me enlighten you with a few key details regarding this exquisite Tom Anderson Hollow Cobra with a lush deep tobacco fade finish – Used model with a 2006 serial number

Cobra details :- At first many might believe it is another exquisite, boutique style, Tele flavoured guitar, with a highly figured maple top – Many such guitars feature the traditional bolt on maple neck format, with either a bass wood, alder or ash body, along with a Fender-esq 25.5″ scale length – However the Cobra is Tom Anderson’s tweak on that format with 3 major changes – You’ll find a select hollow mahogany body,  which still supports that highly figured maple top – You also find a mahogany neck supporting a premium grade rosewood fingerboard – With the ‘mahogany foundation’ you’ll also find a 24.75″ scale length – Essentially this results in fat warm mids and softer highs, plus a touch more focus and muscle – The shorter scale length ensures less string tension, so again fatter mids plus easier string bending – So if you find some of the ’boutique Tele’ based guitars are a touch to polite and pure, then check out a Cobra

Playing performance :- if you had to appraise an Anderson Guitar on build quality, or aesthetic appeal, then on both accounts it would score very highly indeed – Both are qualities that you tend to evaluate with your eyes, so how about that all important hands on test – The playing action on an Anderson is about as slick as they come – The neck profile, along with a set of 22 jumbo/heavy frets, allows you to dig in deep and rip into big blues bends – Alternatively sit in the fast lane and show off a few cascading party licks and tricks, that you have worked hard to perfect – It is so easy and effortless to play and certainly responds to a light touch – If you require a playing performance that is less slick and maybe more of a fight, then I can raise the action a touch as required, or indeed try a set of 11’s – The mahogany neck possesses more of a silky smooth satin finish, so again it immediately feels played in – The neck profile is Anderson’s ‘happy medium’  with a 1 11/16″ nut width – The 2 popular fingerboard widths tend to be Fender-esq at 1 5/8″ or Gibson-esq at 1 11/16″, so this Anderson features the slightly wider fingerboard width – The ‘happy medium’ neck profile measures .852″ around the top nut end and gently fattens out to .903″ around the 12th fret – As Anderson says, it is not to fat nor to thin  – Very comfortable and easy to handle is the bottom line

Tonal character :- As I mentioned earlier, the shorter scale length, along with the mahogany foundation + humbuckers, ensures fatter mids and softer highs, with a warm focused voice that still retains snap, clarity and articulation – The Hollow body ensures an open voice, that offers more clarity and twang then you’d find on an LP, yet more depth and body then you’d find on a single coil equipped Tele  – Spec’d with a pair of custom wound Anderson pick-ups with a H1- in the neck position, along with a slightly hotter H2+ in the bridge position – Both are more vintage flavoured with a mild to medium output – The H1- and H2+ blend and support each other with a warm creamy voice from the neck position and more of a focused bite and attack from the bridge position – It is that blend of midrange muscle, rounded lows and sweet highs coupled with excellent articulation that works so well with a clean amp setting, for chilled out jazz and blues, or indeed a hi-gain amp setting for classic rock styles – From say Robben Ford to EVH and this Cobra can be found enjoying itself – The H1- in the neck position, offers something of a 335 character, when you listen to its warmth and articulation – Whilst the H2+ in the bridge position offers a fat Tele character, regarding its bite and attack, yet blends that with the depth and warmth of a humbucker

On more subtle rock/blues overdriven amp settings, or indeed a hi-gain amp setting, then check out the Cobra’s volume pot to explore the variations it can deliver – Roll it off from 10 to explore subtle yet effective variations of gain – This approach will allow you to go from chilled and clean, to overdrive, when you’ve selected more of a subtle gain setting on the amp – On a hi-gain amp setting, a similar approach allows you to adjust the level of gain as required – I found that when you went from 10 to around 5/6/7 on the volume pot, you did not always notice/appreciate any reduction in gain/volume, yet as you wind the pot back towards 10, you certainly appreciate any increase – So yes such volume tweaks are subtle, but effective

Don’t think of it as just having the regular Gibson 3 humbucking switching options, as Anderson utilises a wiring loom that offers far more tonal options – A 5 way switch delivers you the three classic humbucker voices at position 1, 3 and 5, whilst position 2 and 4 are tapped to offer those crisp Fender flavoured voices, that can be so handy at times for funky rhythm chops
