In essence, the only difference between a 56 Gold Top LP and a 57 Gold Top LP, is a pair of P90 pick ups, as against a pair of humbuckers – Likewise, the essential difference between a Les Paul Standard and this used Gibson Les Paul Classic Soapbar, is again humbuckers v P90 Soapbar pick-ups – Yet thanks to the all gloss ebony nitro finish, there is a touch of similarity between this Classic Soapbar and a 55 Black Beauty LP Custom – In fact I briefly had a thought about finding and fitting a ‘Staple’ pick-up, with alnico V magnets, in the neck position – But decided to leave it as it is, hence it is still all original – Before I update you with additional details I need to let you know this used Les Paul, with a 2018 serial number, has barely been played – A black nitro gloss finish can easily mark, so very hard to keep them ‘as new’ and spotless, yet this used LP is about as clean as they come – No nicks or grazes, in fact barely a pick mark on the scratchplate, so look hard to find any signs of previous use – Clean frets, as you’d expect – I guess it has barely been played – Nevertheless it has spent a short time on my bench for a new set of 10’s, along with a check up + set-up – So it is already to go

In no particular order, listed below is various additional info :-

To a large degree the amp you use will determine the tone that the Classic Soapbar delivers – From chilled out blues/jazz/fusion based styles, through to classic rock, or the punk side of Green Day, that is loaded with energy – The neck pick-up can be sweet, warm and lush with the articulation you’d expect from a single coil pick-up – Or it can deliver a full bodied Tele style twang from the bridge pick-up, that is tight and loaded with energy – Push it a bit more for a hard gritty tone with no shortage of girth and bite – The volume control works smoothly across the 1-10 spectrum, therefore if the amp is set-up with some gain, trim the volume pot down a touch, as required, to obtain a cleaner voice, without losing any of the guitars goodness – This approach will deliver far more expression to your playing – Dial in loads of dirt on the amp, for more of that ‘punky-esq’ Green Day style tone, but no matter how you set it up, that single coil clarity is always present – Will it sit in a death metal band ? – Probably not, but it will work hard in many different genres of music – In short, a P90 pick-up delivers a  thicker and more rounded tone, with more output, than you’d find on a Strat – Equally, it can match the power of a humbucker, so with the sustain provided by a Les Paul there is no shortage of emotion within such a guitar  – The more you play it, the more you’ll get out of it and appreciate the dynamic response it can offer – From the raw blues side of Muddy Waters, to the elegant styles of Robben Ford, or Steely Dan and the Soapbar LP will feel at home – And remember the Dave Gilmour ‘brick in the wall’ solo was recorded with a P90 pick-up
