One thing is for sure, when Gretsch decide to pimp it up, then they certainly know how to deliver the goods – Granted the White Falcon is the more well known  model, within the Gretsch line up,  that offers all the bling, but the Penguin is a close sibling, that still offers the same snazzy character – Today I can offer for sale a used Gretsch G6134B Black Penguin, that I can confirm possesses a 2010 date of birth, courtesy of the JT10 serial number  – Granted it is now approaching its 10th birthday, yet it is in excellent condition – Take into account  black  always reveals any hint of a graze, more so than any other finish – Yet close scrutiny will reveal only subtle signs of any wear – No dings or dints – So be prepared to look more carefully to discover any slight hint of a graze to the top surface of the gloss finish – You may well find some, but they are feint – Even the gold platted hardware shows little sign of any wear – No fret wear – Re-strung and set-up with a new set of 10-52 gauge strings – This gauge is more preferable in my opinion to a regular 10-46 gauge – The thicker wound strings are more taut, so still allow for a low action without any string rattle when you are exploring any walking bass lines

Host of details in no particular order :-

Playing performance – I fully appreciate that the feel and playability of any instrument is a matter of taste – Yet I find this so easy to handle – Maybe my technique, or playing style, but I don’t find it a speed machine, but I find it responds to a light touch with a positive feel about the whole set-up – From Jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, through to country, pop and indie it feels at home – Maybe it suits the more simplistic and melodic side of playing, were the tune wins over slick licks and speed – I always quote George Harrison and Tom Petty when I make such comments, yet it equally allows you to delve into some Setzer style phrases as required

Regarding tonal character then a Gretsch is almost unique, with always more twang than sustain – it doesn’t sound like a Tele, a Les Paul, or an SG, but it does sound like a Gretsch – Big lows, clear sparkling highs, clear mids and that twang and clarity – You’ll experience a big voice on clean amp settings, that loves to sit in the chilled out zone via the neck pick-up, or deliver country twang via the bridge pick-up – Yet in my opinion it sounds at its best on an overdriven amp setting that is not saturated with gain – Think Chuck Berry, Brian Setzer and Tom Petty – The bridge pick up bites, with a hint of attitude, yet it always stays tight and in control – It cuts like a Tele, yet chimes like only a Gretsch can – The neck pick-up is more pure and warm and almost lush in comparison to the bridge pick-up – They compliment each other so well – You can try it in a more grunge rock format through a hi-gain amp setting and experience a  fresh culture, yet it still twangs like a Gretsch should – I’ve had plenty of fun evaluating this guitar, both regarding how it feels and plays, along with its tonal character
