Look through many early video clips of the 50’s and 60’s and apart from Hank with the Shadows, plus Buddy Holly, then you don’t see to many Strat’s in action – Look at The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Yardbirds or Faces, The Animals etc and very few signs of a Strat can be found – Then Jimi changed all this – Granted you could find him playing an SG and a V at times, but to all tense and purpose he was a Strat man and this influence has reigned supreme since the late 60’s – So with full approval from the Hendrix estate, the Custom Shop team now pay tribute to Jimi with a Fender Custom Shop Hendrix Voodoo Child NOS Strat, with black finish – So the non aged, brand new shiny example – As everyone knows, Jimi simply took a right handed Strat, restrung it back to front and turned the whole guitar upside down – The Voodoo Child Strat reverses this policy, so it is a left handed guitar, with strings changed around, for a right handed player – The mirror image as such – Other distinguishing features include a special engraved neck plate and supported with a special decal on the reverse of the headstock – Note the special Voodoo Child strap – I’ve even adjusted the set-up for E flat tuning, just the way Jimi played it – I can edit this as required

Full spec and details :-

Feel and playability :-  The actual feel of the neck is pure vintage – Based on the mid 60’s profile, that is a touch fuller than the early classic 60’s profile – Nothing that could ever be classed as chunky, so a sensible and comfortable amount of girth – If the feel of the neck is pure vintage, then to enhance the playing performance, you’ll find a 9.5″ fingerboard radius, along with a set of 6105 narrow jumbo frets, will allow for a slick and easy action, that responds to a light touch – No choking out when you rip into a few big bends, whilst a set of 10’s feel slinky and easy to handle – I decided to adjust the set-up to suit a Jimi style E flat tuning – I can edit this as required so let me know what is best for you

Tonal character :-Do I really need to say how such a Strat sounds ?  Yet whilst we are all familiar with the great tones of Little Wing and The Wind Cries Mary,  many can throw back at us that it was all in his touch and feel and maybe this is the case – Yet this Strat is loaded with warmth, character, soul and expression, be it played through clean or overdriven settings on your amp – The volume and tone pots allow you to utilise them from 1-10 as they dial in subtle, yet effective variations, that allow you and the guitar to control the amp – To leave this Strat on 10 seriously limits the guitars potential, so much so that  with the volume pot on or around 6 or 7, it is a great place to set up base camp – This approach allows you to go to 10 when you have an additional statement to say, when you require that turbo boost and an extra amount of edge, otherwise stay in the chilled out lounge with the pot rolled back a touch – Hence you acquire the level of emotion found in a good singer or say a sax player – So clean, to Little Wing to classic rock n blues and this Strat is loaded with character

’69’ pick-ups :- The Strat pick-ups from this period are about the least powerful pick-ups that Fender have ever made – But power is not king here – It is about tone and expression – Modern players like John Mayer buy into this tonal character with clear rounded lows, sparkling sweet highs and transparent scooped mids – The overall tonal character is pure, smooth, crisp and angelic – Yet at all times that spanky Strat character shines through with a percussive attack and snap – With the volume pot on 10 you’ll acquire that additional bite with maybe just a hint of fizz, so simply roll the pot down to around 7/8 or 9 for a softer approach – The E flat tuning and mirror image reverse headstock certainly adds something to the tonal character, perhaps a touch bigger and darker – Subtle variation but audible nonetheless
