With a seriously aged character, that features a sea foam green nitro finish, perched on a worn sunburst nitro finish, this Strat is clearly identifiable amongst a host of other Strat replicas – So let me fill you in with all the details and info regarding this used Limited Edition Fender Custom Shop 1962 Heavy Relic Strat – The certificate and other features clearly identify it as a 2008 Limited Edition model – Hence a blonde/cream vintage style tolex case, with the ‘Custom Shop Limited Edition’ decal embroidered into the case lid – Note the Limited Edition engraved 4 bolt neck plate, as well as a similar decal on the rear of the headstock – Again such info is repeated on the appropriate certificate – I know it has only had one careful owner since new and only used sparingly at home during the last 10 years or so, as such it is effectively still in the same condition as when it was first purchased – Complete with certificate and tags, along with a bag full of goodies, which looks like it has never been used – Nevertheless it has spent some time on my work bench, for a new set of strings (10-46), a check up and set-up, so it is already to go

Full spec and details :-

Tonal Character :- Mounted on the aged nitro pick guard is a well calibrated set of Custom Shop pick-ups with a ’69’ in the neck, a Fat 50’s in the middle and a hotter Texas Special in the bridge – This offers an excellent blend and well balanced set of voices across all 5 switch positions – The ’69’ in the neck is pure vintage ‘Hendrix’ territory – Probably the weakest of all the Fender vintage based pick-ups, but the tone and texture is pure Wind Cries Mary and Little Wing – Soft, warm, clear and rich, with shimmering sparkling highs  – In short a great vintage spec’d neck pick-up – Compliment that with a Texas Special in the bridge position, to deliver an extra ounce of output and bite – Great to drive the amp and push it in to overdrive, for those hot Texas blues licks, in the style of SRV – The guitar works well with the volume and/or tone pots rolled off a touch, for a softer voice, without losing any of the guitars natural goodness and expression – As such this is a great place to set up base camp – On that basis you can bring the pots back to their wide open number 10 position, as and when you require, that extra boost, edge and bite – Hence a flexible and responsive tonal palette is available to you, that ensures this Strat is loaded with soul and emotion – A reverse wound/reverse polarity Fat 50’s  pick-up sits in the middle position and provides you with a texture that is warm, rich, crisp and very transparent – Many players don’t use the middle pick-up on its own, but it works so well with the two outside pick-ups to deliver those infectious out of phase quack tones that you find on position 2 and 4 of the switch – The neck/middle out of phase quack tone has a full body to it that is sweet, with scooped mids, whilst the middle/bridge position version has more of a bright crisp nature to it, that still retains those smooth highs – Both quack tones are just so infectious

The Texas Special still delivers the goods on a clean amp setting, albeit with the volume pot rolled off a touch, for more of a controlled voice – So wind it back towards 10 when you require more edge and a touch of attitude – However it probably works at its expressive best on overdriven amp settings, to deliver more bite, as and when required – For hot lead work run it with the pots wide open, but if you require more of a chilled out voice, then simply roll off the pots, until you find that magical sweet spot- Remember on this Strat that the bridge pick-up is now wired to the bottom tone pot, hence you can now control those highs, especially if you feel they are a touch spikey on overdriven amp settings – As I mentioned earlier, this pick-up spec is well balanced across all 5 switch settings, from spanky and sweet in the neck position, to a pushed to the edge voice from the Texas Special – So try them out across clean, subtle blues/rock overdriven or hi-gain overdriven amp settings

Playing performance:-  The feel of the maple neck is pure vintage – It has the classic 60’s Oval C neck profile, with a thin nitro aged finish, that has been fully cut back to leave you with that ‘dirty/worn’ vibe,  that feels so natural and instantly  ‘played in’ from day one – For a slick playing performance it is spec’d with a 9.5″ fingerboard radius, along with a set of Sanko 6105 medium jumbo frets – As such a fluid playing action awaits any prospective buyer – Effortless string bending and no choking out – A set of 10’s now feel so much more slinky – If you want a Strat that allows you to play in the fast lane, or drop into moody minor blues lick mode, with loads of emotion, soul and passion, then this is an ideal combination as it blends the vintage feel from the neck and a modern slick playing performance from the fingerboard, courtesy of those chunkier frets – The neck starts of with that ‘melt in your hand’ C profile that possesses just a hint of extra meat on it, so .865″ deep at the top nut end, then fattens out to a  .935″ depth at the 12th fret – Some will say pure vintage magic
