I have recently acquired a used, but very tidy PRS Hollowbody 1, circa 2005, with a lush blue matteo gloss finish – Allow for some usual light tarnishing on the nickel plated humbucker covers, plus wrap over bridge and you’ll find this is a clean instrument – I could never say it is as new, or mint condition, yet careful viewing will only reveal light signs of use, with perhaps the merest hint of any superficial surface blemish, as against any signs of dings or dints – No buckle wear on the rear of the body – No fret issues – Complete with a deluxe Hiscox case – I have allowed this Hollowbody a visit to my work bench for a new set of strings, frets polished and the fingerboard cleaned and fed with lemon oil – Set-up and re-strung with a set of 10/46 gauge strings, to ensure a slick and easy action awaits any prospective buyer
Product details – All solid woods on the Hollowbody 1, so no laminates as per 335 style guitars – As such the body is ‘hollowed out’ from a solid block of mahogany, then a solid carved maple top is added, leaving you with just a small solid mahogany ‘support’ block under the bridge assembly – Hence weight watchers will adore the fact that the Hollowbody only just registers 5lbs and 2oz on my digital scales – One piece mahogany neck with a dark and smooth Indian rosewood fingerboard, fitted with 22 medium jumbo frets and moon inlays – Wide/fat neck profile that measures .875″ around the top nut end and gently fills out to .962″ around the 12th fret – PRS 14:1 ratio locking tuners with ebonised (ebony style) buttons , PRS wrap over bridge/tailpiece with full intonation adjustment to accommodate heavy strings as well as a plain or wound 3rd string – ’20th’ engraved truss rod cover – Fitted with a pair of PRS ‘vintage flavoured’ humbuckers with a neck pick-up that measures 6.21K and a slightly hotter bridge pick-up delivering 6.91K
First comments must go to the graceful and seductive appearance of this Hollowbody 1, thanks to a blue matteo gloss finish, sitting on a figured maple top, that possesses lots of interesting character without to glitzy or over the top – So maybe more of a work man like vibe, so one you can play without having to give it the ‘kid’s glove treatment’ – So let’s now move on to the tonal aspects of the Hollowbody 1 and you’ll discover a natural, full bodied, rich, warm and open tone, with no shortage of clear harmonics, plus excellent articulation – This is part of the character of a guitar body that is hollowed out of a solid block of mahogany, topped of with a solid carved maple top – No laminates, so just one central core piece of wood to produce a more natural tone – It will certainly appeal to any jazz/blues/fusion based guitarist, or indeed a virtuoso solo guitarist – Furthermore it can more than handle it’s own working in a top 40/club band if required – But for fans of George Benson, Kenny Burrell, or Martin Taylor, through to the jazz/blues styles of Larry Carlton and Robben Ford, it is a guitar that will more than wet your taste buds – It can produce a warm overdriven tone with excellent sustain if required, but it’s strength is in a clean, or more subtle overdriven environment, for those who want to hear the true tone of the guitar – It does not feel and play like an old traditional f-holed jazz box – Instead it possesses all the playing characteristics of a modern PRS Guitar and as such it will easily handle more intricate playing styles – Yes the neck profile is tagged as wide/fat, but don’t be scared by that phrase, as while it has just the right amount of girth to it, to enhance the tone, sustain and stability, fat or wide it ain’t – More importantly it is a dream to play, with just a light touch required to burn off a few tasty licks, whilst effortless string bending is possible – To sum it all up, the Hollowbody adopts a fresh approach that blends the strengths of a Gibson style 335 with a traditional L5 jazz arch top to produce a new original classic
