Of course £4289 is a lot of money in the opinion of many, but can you be enticed to part with the necessary funds to buy this used, but barely played Fender Jason Smith Masterbuilt 1968 Paisley Strat – The certificate of authenticity clearly shows a date of birth as 2014 – I can confirm it has had one owner since new and I’ve known the previous owner now for a number of years, as a discerning player/collector – Complete with the late 60’s style black case and certificate as well a Fender cable, polishing cloth and leather strap – Re-strung and set-up with a set of 10’s and a sensible fluid action – Hard to truly say any used relic finish is as new, as it is impossible to determine what is factory aged and what has aged through use, but knowing the previous owner and can effectively state that it has not seen a lot of use – No fret issues whatsoever – So if you want a late 60’s Strat, with the large headstock and a finish that is truly distinctive, then you know what to do next

User friendly playing performance :- the big plus on this Strat is how it feels and how well it plays – The ’69’ U profile possesses a very comfortable amount of depth, but not to the point that it feels fat, or indeed impedes your own playing technique – With an easy playing action, a 10″ fingerboard radius, along with a set of medium jumbo frets, then a chunkier neck does not need to feel hard to handle – Maybe a big neck with small frets and a high action can be somewhat of a handful, but this Strat is very user friendly, to the point that the playing action is effortless and responds to a light touch, so try out a few fluid licks and tricks – A set of 10’s now feel slinky and even big  blues bends and controlled vibrato can be conquered without any effort – The action is slick and fluid along all 6 strings and all 21 frets – It instantly feels as though your left hand and the neck have known each other for years, in part thanks to more of a satin played in vibe on the maple neck – No aged wear on the neck/fingerboard

Tonal character :- Do I really need to enlighten you as to how a late 60’s Strat sounds, as so many of us are familiar with the great tones of Little Wing, The Wind Cries Mary and a host of other tracks by Jimi  – Yet many may throw back at me that it was all in his touch and feel, so maybe this is the case – Yet this Strat is loaded with warmth, character, soul and expression, be it played through clean or overdriven settings on your amp – The volume and tone pots allow you to utilise them across the whole 1-10 range,  as they dial in subtle, yet effective changes, that allow you and the guitar to control the amp – To leave this Strat on 10 seriously limits the guitars potential, so much so that  with the volume pot on or around 6 or 7, it is a great place to set up base camp, especially on overdriven amp settings  – This approach will now allow you to move towards 10, as and when you have an additional statement to make, that requires the ‘turbo boost’ turned, that delivers an extra amount of edge – Otherwise stay in the chilled out lounge with the volume pot rolled off a touch – Hence you acquire a similar level of emotion that can be found in a good singer or say a sax player – So clean, to Little Wing, to classic rock n blues and this Strat is loaded with character

Hand wound Josefina ’69’ pick-ups :- The Strat pick-ups from this period are about the least powerful pick-ups that Fender have ever made – But power is not king here – It is about tone and expression – Modern players like John Mayer buy into this tonal character with clear rounded lows, sparkling sweet highs and transparent scooped mids – The overall tonal character is pure, smooth, crisp and angelic – Yet at all times that spanky Strat character shines through with a percussive attack and snap – With the volume pot on 10 you’ll acquire that additional bite with maybe just a hint of fizz, so simply roll the pot down to around 7/8 or 9 for a softer approach – Both the bridge and middle pick up are now wired to the bottom tone pot, so on hi-gain amp settings you can take away any fizzy edges as required – You decide if it you want it on the edge or take the mellow route
