You’ve checked out a Strat – You love the single coil clarity it delivers, yet wished it had a bit more ooomp, warmth and depth – You’ve checked out a Les Paul, love the warmth, sustain and output, yet somehow wished it had more clarity – If that sounds familiar, then the time to check out this PRS McCarty Gold Top Soapbar could not be better – I’ve recently taken into stock a 2008 model, with the classic gold top finish, that sits on a maple top (note the traditional PRS natural edged body binding) – Overall the condition is very good, without actually acquiring the ‘exceptional clean tag’ – As an overview, any grazes or nicks are on the light side, to the top surface of the finish, so more superficial surface grazes, as against dings or dints – Two slight nicks on the maple edged body binding – You’ll find the usual light signs of oxidization/tarnish to the nickel hardware – So played but not abused- No fret issues whatsoever – Re-strung and set-up with 10’s – Deluxe PRS case included – Whole guitar weighs a very credible 8lbs and 5oz and possesses a vibrant unplugged character
The design and vibe of a McCarty is very much routed in the yesteryear period, with a one piece mahogany body supporting a maple top, a one piece mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, thinner depth headstock, with a set of ‘Kluson’ style non-locking tuners, light weight aluminium wrapover bridge/tailpiece, plus a pair of Seymour Duncan P90 pick-ups (neck pick up measures 8.08K with a hotter bridge pick up measuring 11.42K) – The guitar has been re-strung and set-up with a set of 10’s and plays a treat, with a fluid and easy playing action, that is a hallmark of any PRS Guitars – The 22 medium jumbo frets are impeccably fitted, correctly profiled and polished to perfection, to enable effortless string bending, so much so that a set of 10’s still feel nice and slinky – The neck possesses the wide/fat profile, which whilst it has some meat on it, fat and wide like a bat it ain’t – Just think of a slightly slimmer and more comfortable Les Paul neck and your probably there – Like the original 50’s LP Juniors and Specials, the PRS utilises a very light weight wrapover bridge/tailpiece, which many feel is very much part of the tone – The PRS version is engineered to deliver perfect intonation, so even complex jazz flavoured chords sound in tune – Note a pair of chunky mounting studs/posts to further enrich the sustain
To a large degree the amp you use will determine the tone that the McCarty Soapbar delivers – For chilled out jazz/blues based styles, through to classic rock and beyond, then this guitar will take you all the way to that sweet home in Alabama – It can be sweet and warm with great articulation, it can have a full bodied Tele style twang, or push it a bit more for a hard gritty tone with loads of bite – The volume control works effectively across the 10-1 range, as such if the amp is set-up with some overdrive, turn the volume pot down touch, so as to clean up your voice, without any negative deterioration in your expressive tonal character – This format will now ensure that more soul and emotion is part and parcel of you and your technique – Dial in loads of dirt on your amp, for more of that ‘punk-esq’ Green Day voice, as and when required, but no matter how you set it up, that single coil clarity is always present – Can it sit in a death metal band ? – Probably not, but it will enjoy working in hot country, pop or indie styles, plus much more – In short it has a thicker and more rounded tone, with more output, than you’ll find on a Strat, coupled with the power and sustain of a humbucker equipped Gibson – The more you play it the more you’ll get out of it – From the raw blues side of Chicago blues and Muddy Waters, to the elegant styles of Robben Ford or Steely Dan and the McCarty Gold Top will feel at home
