As an overview I would describe the Swamp Ash Studio as a Strat with the turbo switch turned on - If you have played a good Strat through either a boost pedal, or indeed an overdrive pedal, with the gain control on the pedal kept on the low side and the volume control kept high, so as to boost the signal, but not to change the tone, the end result is the land where the Swamp Ash Studio lives - Incredible tonal variation - Plenty of snap - Loaded with dynamics and character and very responsive - It is the guitar that will let you caress it to produce a soft warm tone, or attack it and dig in a bit for a more aggressive vibe, with plenty of bite - Laid back blues/jazz, hot country, rock 'n' roll, classic rock or modern hi-gain rock, the Swamp Ash Studio delivers - When you have a bolt-on maple neck, a swamp ash body and a tremelo system, you essentially have the ingredients of a Strat, so it is no surprise that the overall tone has a strong Strat vibe about it, albeit a Strat on steroids, but that does not mean it is a rock based party animal - It will equally work with a clean based amp for a soft jazz/blues vibe, then delve into some crisp disco/funk chops, or if you dare try some lush Steely Dan licks and chords
The taper of the volume and tone pots allows the controls to work smoothly and effectively over the whole 1-10 range - This allows you to set-up the amp with some overdrive, then roll off the guitar volume pot to control the level of overdrive and as you reduce the volume pot even further, you end up with a clean tone - Hence it is very responsive to your requirements - Two excellent funky 'out of phase' tones can be found in the usual positions of the 5 way switch - You'll hear plenty of quack and body when you select them, coupled with smooth crisp highs - Note, you have the option of using the bridge pick-up in humbucker mode, or utilise the coil tap, found as a push/pull switch on the tone pot
The new V12 finish, in this case charcoal (note it is a solid finish and not translucent) sits on the swamp ash body - The V12 finish is ultra thin, hence it allows the guitar to breath and as such the natural resonance of the guitar is still clearly audible - Yet the finish is tough and that glass like gloss appearance that PRS are famous for, is as good as ever - The finish on the flamed maple neck and fingerboard again is ultra thin, but instead of actually sitting on top of the wood, it 'soaks' in to protect the wood and as such it feels 'played in' from the moment you play it - The pattern regular neck profile will be familiar to many Fender based players, with a similar vibe and top nut width and a very comfortable amount of depth - As with any PRS Guitar, the playing experience is a joy to behold - You'll adore the fluid playing action along all 22 frets and find string bending so effortless, so much so that many customers feel the guitar is set-up with a set of 9's - Yes it is set up with 10's - I find that playing a PRS allows you to bring out the very best in your playing, to the point it almost makes you a better player than you are and that is a great asset - Granted some players may prefer a slightly higher action and/or a heavier set of strings, so they can dig in a bit more, but this is an easy adjustment that we can carry out if required
The combination of the PRS locking tuners, top nut and the PRS fulcrum trem assembly ensures trouble free tuning - You have to seriously abuse it before you get into any tuning issues - Furthermore it feels very smooth and positive - Note the bridge saddles are milled brass and nickel plated, along with a milled brass tremelo block, so this will further enhance the tone and sustain as well as delivering rich clear harmonics - You could make a strong case for some PRS Guitars having such flamboyant tops, that they just sit on walls, as an art form, but the Swamp Ash Studio is a functional guitar that is designed to be worked and as such it delivers an unparalled playing experience coupled with a very useful and versatile tonal variation
