Many might be familiar with the shape of the Yamaha Image Custom, but less familiar with the actual name – The answer is fairly simple – In the UK it was branded as the Yamaha MSG and in this instance, the top of the range Yamaha MSG Custom – But for various reasons it was always called the Yamaha Image Custom – So the same guitar with a  different name and as many of you will know, designed in the UK by Martyn Booth – So for what it is worth, it is very hard to find such a version in the UK – Equally the top of the range Custom version appears to be far more scarce than the Standard and Deluxe options – Notable fans of this model included Alan Murphy, Andy Powell, Scott Gorham and Captain Sensible, amongst others

So in no particular order let me enlighten you with the following information :-

Overall tonal character :- far more crisp and transparent than a Les Paul – Still plenty of depth and body, with crisp highs, but far less fat mids, so no shortage of articulation – As a reference point then maybe more akin to a 335, with more of a clean Larry Carlton voice than a thicker Joe Bonamassa voice – Maybe more Steely Dan and less Kossoff/Free  – On clean amp settings I’m not so sure you’d utilise the mid boost option and if you do then I’d suggest a subtle boost is far more effective – A high boost level can be to much on a clean amp setting – However on a more subtle overdriven amp setting it can be very effective to allow you to go from less gain, to more gain, as and when you require that additional ‘turbo boost’ – So subtle power chords to screeching solos  with one switch  – Coil tap options allow you to instantly move from a full humbucker voice to a more crisp funky ‘Chic’ voice with a single coil flavour
