At Guitars4You I  always relish the opportunity to acquire a discerning selection of used guitars, in particular Custom Shop Relic Strats – Yet here in lies an interesting issue – How do you know they are used and as such, could you ever describe a used Relic Strat to be in as ‘in new showroom condition’ ??? – I can now offer you the chance to acquire a 2009 Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition 1961 Relic Strat, that looks ultra cool, with an aged lake placid blue nitro finish – To indicate the limited edition nature of the guitar, the rear of the headstock features a ‘limited edition’ decal, whilst the 4 bolt neck plate is engraved with ‘limited edition’ a CZ serial number sequence (common to Ltd Ed models) along with the Custom Shop logo – Furthermore the case features an embroidered ‘limited edition’ Custom Shop logo within the case lid and of course the certificate of authenticity is included, along with appropriate tags

Spec is pretty much vintage based throughout and as in keeping with many Limited Edition models from this period, you’ll find a set of hand wound Abby pick-ups sit at the heart of the engine room – signed and dated Abby 09 (see pics)

Tonal character :- Sounds good so far, but the best is yet to come and you’ll quickly discover this when you get round to hooking it up to your amp set up and find it is loaded with soul, emotion and expression – With a hand select alder body, this Strat comes in at  7lbs and 15oz and played unplugged you’ll hear it possesses a natural vibrant and lively character which adds so much to the overall tone – As mentioned earlier, the pick-ups are hand wound by Abigail Ybarra, all controlled via the 5 way switch, with the lower tone pot now working both the bridge – The neck pick-up is oh so sweet, musically rich and smooth, coupled with clear shimmering highs to give you a lovely degree of clarity that has obvious comparisons to the SRV tone, with transparent punchy mids – Strat bridge pick-ups can sometimes be a touch weak and thin sounding, but here we have a pick-up that possesses enough depth, body, bite and balls, without that shrill like ice pick attack – On clean settings it’s crisp and clear with good body and depth – On overdriven amp settings this transfers into a musical warm bite that works well on both riffs, driving Texas shuffle rhythms and lead work – The fact that you now have a tone pot working on the bridge pick-up, ensures that if required, you can roll off the highs just a touch until you discover that magical sweet spot – Both ‘out of phase’ tones are excellent with an excellent ‘quack’ about them, coupled with a level of smoothness and body that is rare to find – Not all Strats are this good, so if you are in the market for an aged Strat with a killer tone, then maybe the hunt is over – Overall lush qualities to a musical bite and attack can be found with all the required shades in between

Feel/playing performance :-  Whatever magic is in this Strat regarding the playing experience can’t be seen – You feel it – The classic 65 Large C profile instantly feels comfortable, familiar and very much old school from the vintage era, with an extra ounce of meat on it – So very much akin to the SRV #1 profile – It can’t be considered fat, but it possesses a touch more meat than the regular 60’s C profile  – Spec’d with a thin honey tint nitro finish, that has been fully cut back for that instant ‘played in from day one’ vibe, along with the ‘dirty/worn’ character – To further enhance a slick playing performance, you’ll find a set of narrow/jumbo 6105 frets, along with a 9.5″ fingerboard radius – You can still dig in and attack those big pentatonic blues bends, but equally a slick playing actions awaits without any choking out – All in all such modern tweaks allow for a more slick and user friendly playing experience
