I know the full history of this used, 2013 Collings City Limits with a vintage flavoured, amber sunburst, satin nitro finish – I custom ordered it, then sold it to a very discerning customer –  Its only had one very discerning owner since new and I can endorse the fact that it has only experienced home use – Judging by the condition of the nitro satin finish, then it is easy to deduce that it has barely been played, plus exceptionally well cared for – So  hunt long and hard to find any signs of use – It is an extremely clean instrument – Re-strung and set up with a new set of 10’s and a sensible fluid action that responds to a light touch – Of course I can adjust the set-up as required, so just let me know accordingly – Includes the deluxe Collings and appropriate tag with serial number ID – The new price on such a similar spec’d model would now be £5115, so a serious saving on that price, for what is effectively an as new instrument

I love this quote that I borrowed from the Collings Guitars web site  ‘There are lots of products created with no greater aspiration than to be sold to a consumer, but as consumers of expensive musical instruments, many of us value the subtle signs that tell us the builder cared more than he had to – that careful thought, superior materials and skilled hands have all contrived to create an instrument that transcends the ordinary and defines the extraordinary – This is the best reason, in our opinion, to consider buying a superior instrument like this Collings City Limits in the first place – If you simply need a guitar, you can buy one that is reasonably playable and creates a reasonably good sound these days for under £200, but you won’t be buying an instrument that has been artfully crafted from the best materials, or one that is capable of producing an extraordinary playing experience and tone

Collings City Limits Spec/features :-

If you had to appraise this Collings City Limits on its aesthetic status alone, then its understated simplicity is its seductive appeal – These alluring qualities  with a faded ‘unburst nitro finish on a ’59’ style figured maple top capture the vintage vibe of classic guitars from a golden era – With that in mind it is no surprise  that the Collings approach is to take the essence of a classic model, add a few subtle yet effective tweaks, select the finest ingredients, coupled with impeccable workmanship and attention to detail, to ensure the City Limits delivers the ultimate playing performance – The Collings method is to build one guitar at a time, hence all woods, pots, capacitors and pick-ups are hand selected, to ensure that all components match and compliment each other – Woods are tapped and evaluated to ensure different tonal qualities and densities work together in perfect harmony – Appraise the City Limits, then you’ll fully appreciate that the knowledge, evaluation and attention to detail that Collings possess, pays dividend in the end

Tonal character  – If you thought the aesthetic appeal had you hooked, then wait until you play it – Some might be able to resist the alluring qualities of that curly flamed maple top, but you try and resist the feel and playing performance that the City Limits offers  – It gets even better when you plug it in as its loaded with emotion, expression, character and soul – If you want it clean, sultry and smoky, or crisp clear,  and bright, but not brittle, then no issues – Add some overdrive and if you want it to waillllllllllll, then you try and stop it – Caress each note or attack each string and the City limits will respond – From slow and soulful single blues notes, that blossom and bloom, to fluid legato licks, that allow you to transcend the length of the fingerboard, thanks to excellent note separation and articulation, then the City Limits is on home turf – If you want that double whipped creamy warm smooth tone, or that throaty bark, that bites and sings in a musical way, then the City Limits delivers – The taper of the pots allows them to work smoothly and effectively, with a subtle yet effective response over the whole 1-10 range – Roll off the tone pot and it will sound mellow without strangling the tone – The volume pots will allow you to control the amp, so add some overdrive on the amp, then for a chilled out soft blues voice, roll off the volume pot, or for the full blown approach, simply run the guitar wide open at 10

I suggest you click here for additional comments and video clips with regards to Throbak Pick-ups – Somewhat new to the vintage PAF market, but already their well deserved reputation is spreading – Bell like highs with single coil clarity, so crisp and clear but not thin – Tight focused lows, plus enough mids to add body without strangling the tone and going harsh or muddy on you – Overall, very organic and earthy, with a good balance and contrast between the 2 pick-ups – The City Limits possesses enough character to sit with the amp on a clean setting, for those chilled out jazz/blues ‘The Thrill has gone’ styles, without sounding bland or sterile – Yet when I played with it through an amp with subtle and hi-gain options, I could just leave the amp alone and control all my needs from the guitar alone via the volume pots – The volume pots should be called ’emotional control’ pots, or ‘gain pots’  – Utilise these pots through the overdriven amp settings and you’ll find this City Limits is loaded with passion, soul and emotion – From Kossoff to Green or BB King to Bonamassa and the City Limits certainly has the potential to be your new soul mate

The overall vibe and tone is obviously very LP influenced, no surprise on that score, but what Collings offers is an attention to detail, coupled with a fine playing performance that few Gibson’s can compete with – A large portion of the overall tone comes from the choice of woods and in particular the neck – Fat neck, fat tone, thin neck thin tone, so like any good LP based instrument, the Collings City Limits has a fullish C neck profile – Enough girth to enrich the tone, sustain and stability, but not to the point that it impedes the playing experience – The Collings may not exactly play itself, but you try and put it down and stop playing it – The nitro satin finish also applies to the neck, so it instantly feels like an old soul mate, to ensure that you experience that ‘played in’ from day one vibe  – The guitar is set up with a set of 10’s and a slick playing action, to further enrich the overall playing experience
