Post Brexit and a far weaker pound and we’ve seen quite a few hefty prices on recent deliveries of Custom Shop models – Yet I’ve managed to acquire a small collection of new custom ordered models, still at the old 2016 price, so welcome into stock a new Fender Custom Shop 1960 Relic Strat with a thin nitro vintage white finish, along with a nitro tortoiseshell scratchplate to further enrich the guitars aesthetic appeal – Highly spec’d with a few custom options including a set of hand wound Fat 60’s pick-ups – Vintage feel, but modern tweaks to enrich the playing performance, so all in all a new Strat that captures the magical qualities of yesteryear, in a user friendly package

Full spec and details for this 1960 Relic Strat in vintage  white :-

Playing performance :-  The thin nitro finish on the maple neck has been cut back, for more of a satin vibe and to ensure it possesses some of that ‘played in’ character – So no need  to wait years for that sticky new finish to be broken in, as this Strat is just waiting to be played from day one – Additionally this Strat has been spec’d with ‘rolled’ fingerboard edges to further enhance the played in character, yet the neck  still retains its light ‘honey tint’ character – The Oval C neck profile is straight from the early 60’s vintage camp, so it feels like  good old ‘un – This is the classic profile that many players adore and helped to create the Fender legend – Now add a 10″ fingerboard radius, along with a set of medium jumbo frets and these modern tweaks ensure a user friendly playing performance, hence a slick fluid action awaits – Dig in for slow moody licks, or try a few flash licks and tricks and this Strat will fully support you – Set up with a slinky action that is easy to handle – Of course I can adjust as required

Tonal character :-  A set of hand wound Custom Shop Fat 60’s pick-ups sit at the heart of the engine room – Vintage flavoured, yet slightly overwound SRV style, to add just a hint of sizzle – They still retain all the magical vintage attributes of a 60’s Strat but with an extra helping of some spicy Tabasco sauce – Big piano like lows that are rich, sparkling and rounded – Sizzling clear highs that are warm and smooth, with just enough mids to beef up the overall character – An overall very rounded and smooth voice, with that percussive snap and attack with crisp musical highs  – The neck pick-up delivers that classic SRV chilled out voice with the volume pot rolled off a touch, or with more of a percussive attack for those walking bass lines and shuffle rhythm styles when on 10 – The two ‘out of phase’ tones are totally infectious – Crisp, clear and full with more depth and body on the neck/middle combination and more snap on the bridge/middle combination – You’ll hear almost a full Tele like twang with a musical bite from the bridge pick-up that possesses a good level of depth and body, so ideal for power chords, riffs and scorching solos

This Strat is loaded with soul, expression and emotion, so to maximise these attributes use the volume pot accordingly – A great base camp is with it set around the 6 mark, were it will handle most applications, be it the amp set up with  a clean voice or an overdriven amp setting – Then roll the volume pot back towards 10, as and when you have a statement to make that requires that additional boost with a touch of edge to it – On more subtle overdriven amp settings this approach allows you to clean up the voice for more of a laid back approach – Or on hi-gain amp settings it will allow you to roll off the gain for a cleaner voice that still sings, but less saturated, then take it back towards 10 for more of a full on approach – Hence you and the guitar control the amp and every level of expression that goes with it – It allows you to try subtle yet effective variations so for example a subtle overdriven amp setting with the Strat on 10, sounds different to a hi-gain overdriven amp setting and the Strat rolled off to around 6 or 7 – So all the Strat snap and attack on 10, or more chilled and lush as you wind it back down to around 8 or less – Whatever magic that can be found in some old vintage Strats, the Custom Shop team sure know how to  capture it and deliver it into a new package – This is a very special Strat and should give years of unadulterated pleasure to any guitar player

Aged vibe :- I fully appreciate that not all guitar players buy into the seriously aged vibe of many  Custom Shop Strats, so with that in mind, a lightly aged approach might be more preferable and some might say more authentic – On this example you’ll find no shortage of lacquer checking , whilst the nitro finish is cut back for more of a faded vibe, but overall it receives far less dings, dints and wear – Aged, but not abused, might be a fair remark, therefore a lighter relic finish is a far more subtle approach to finding a Strat with some played in character – Hence you can  buy it and play it, without having to give it the kids gloves treatment, then getting upset regarding any nicks and grazes that it will inevitably acquire – It is generally accepted that a thin base coat and finish allows the guitar to ‘breathe’ so as to maximise the guitars natural vibrant character and this is a big plus factor of the aged approach – Play it unplugged and you can hear its natural vibrant acoustic character and as I say on a regular basis, ‘it don’t mean  a thing if it ain’t got that ring’
