Stick a humbucker in the neck position on an early 50’s black guard Tele and you can’t help thinking of ‘Keef’ and ‘Micawber’ – So just add a seriously aged smokey blonde nitro finish to complete the picture of a guitar that looks like it has spent years touring the world with The Rolling Stones – Remove the bottom E string and utilise an open G tuning for Brown Sugar, or Start Me Up and a few gigs with  a tribute band might be coming your way – Yet other potential buyers might just prefer the vibe of a seriously aged Tele as a more traditional work horse – So let me introduce you to a new Fender Custom Shop 52 Heavy Relic Tele with a dirty blonde finish – Custom ordered and highly spec’d so let me update you with a few key features

Normally an early 50’s black guard Tele would have that seriously meaty 52 U neck profile – Fine for some players, yet others find such a chunky profile to much of a handful – This Tele has been spec’d with a ’65’ large C profile, so whilst it still retains some meat, it is both more comfortable and user friendly – The traditional 52 U profile measures around .950″ to 1.00 (top nut to 12th fret) whereas this Tele comes in at .873″ around the top nut end and .970″ around the 12th fret    As with most of today’s Custom Shop Fender Guitars, it retains the classic vibe of a good old ‘un, yet a few select modern features enhance the guitars playing performance – So you’ll find a set of medium jumbo frets and a 9.5″ fingerboard radius on the one piece maple neck/fingerboard – As such a fluid playing action awaits, whilst string bending is still nice ‘n’ easy with a set of 10’s – To further enrich the playing performance, the  thin nitro finish has been cut back for that ‘dirty worn vibe’ so that it feels played in from day one – All in all a black guard Tele that is comfortable and user friendly

No excuses from me for the seriously aged character of this Tele – The thin nitro nocaster blonde finish, looks like it has played plenty of smokey bars for that dirty vibe – Wear denim or leather, along with a black or white T-shirt and it instantly looks pure rock ‘n’ roll – All the vintage spec’d hardware has been aged accordingly and that includes the 5 hole, single ply black guard – So at least you can play it on a regular basis without giving it the kids glove treatment   I just mentioned the aged vintage spec’d hardware, but look on the bridge assembly and you’ll find a set of compensated brass saddles, for improved intonation – A popular mod utilised by the likes of Danny Gatton   Traditional 50’s black guard features include an ash body – The Custom Shop team are fussy about the selection of wood they choose with priority given to weight and tonal character, plus its vibrant acoustic properties – Played un-plugged and this Tele has plenty of zip and life about it – So much so that you can both feel and hear it ring – Weight watchers will adore the fact that this Tele only just nudges 7lbs and 1oz on my digital scales

Tonal character :-  The Nocaster bridge pick-up delivers the classic Tele voice, so no shortage of balls, body, twang and bite – It is not so sharp as to rip your head off, but it can bite, so try it with the tone and volume pot rolled off a touch if you are trying to find  a softer sweet spot – This is very noticeable on overdriven amp settings, so you can run it with the guitar controls wide open on 10, for a touch more aggression that will kick down a bard door – Or adopt the ‘pots  rolled off’ option for a tone that has more of a smooth, soft texture to it – Hence you control the tone, soul, emotion and expression as and when required – The neck pick-up is a vintage spec’d hand wound Seymour Duncan humbucker – As such it has a fat and warm tone that still retains articulation with clear crisp highs – For chilled out jazz/blues, as well as classic rock the humbucking option will sing – Now select the middle position on the 3 way select and this delivers the ideal blend of fat neck and crisp bridge pick-ups, as they compliment each other for that classic Rolling Stones crunch rhythm tone – The taper of the pots allows you to set-up the amp with some overdrive and then play around with volume and tone controls, from wide open, to ‘rolled off’  hence you have so much expression and control over your tonal options

I find it very hard to settle on one guitar – You know that one guitar that does it all – The guitar that you can feel totally content with, so as not to need another change – Maybe this Tele is still not the one and only ultimate guitar that does it all, yet  on a desert island, it maybe the only guitar you’ll need to take with you, to play and enjoy for many hours before any thoughts of a change set in
