Welcome into stock a highly desirable and very rare PRS McCarty Limited Edition Rosewood with a lush teal black finish from 1999 and yes the model with teh Brazilian rosewod neck and fingerboard – From a previous business I was involved in, I actually sold this guitar brand new to the original owner and have recently taken it back into stock – So yes I know its full history – I must at this stage apologies for the quality of the pics – I’ve now taken 3 sets of pics yet somehow still failed to capture the guitars true character, both regarding the lush teal black finish and that sublime curly maple top – I can of course confirm that it looks far better in the flesh
In no particular order let me update you on a few key features and details : –
- Part of a limited run of only , released in 1999 – This is #163 of 250, with the signed control plate still as new and stored in the case – So a plain control plate is fitted to the guitar – This features a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and neck – And whilst PRS have produced a few McCarty models since then, with an Indian rosewood fingerboard and neck, this is the rare holy grail version – In fact this model in many ways was the pre-runner to the Modern Eagle that appeared a few years later, so apart from the thin nitro satin finish they possess many identical features
- Includes the original deluxe PRS case, along with the tags and as I mentioned above it includes the signed and numbered control plate which is still in as new condition
- Re-strung and set-up with a set of 10’s and of course that slick, easy, fluid, PRS playing action
- Condition wise it is in very good condition – On the rear of the body you’ll find the only nick about the size of O – Otherwise close scrutiny is required to find light signs of previous use – So it might not acquire the mint condition tag, yet equally it is very clean – Frets are clean and tidy
- Whole guitar weighs 7lbs and 15oz, so considering the McCarty has a slightly thicker one piece mahogany body this is a very credible weight
- Check out the colourful and genuine abalone bird inlays on the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard
McCarty features and character :- The PRS Limited Edition McCarty with a Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and neck was the influence to the Modern Eagle that arrived around 5 years later – A lush teal black finish sits on a delectable curly maple top, which in turn is perched on a one piece mahogany body, that still features the ‘natural’ edged maple binding, which is a PRS trade mark, now copied by so many – The Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard + neck possesses a dark chocolate character, with an even grained complexion and a smooth feel – The McCarty model pays homage to the great man behind many of Gibson’s finest guitars from the late 50’s period and as such it is very much a traditional instrument – Vintage style Kluson tuners sit on the rosewood headstock, whilst at the other end, the strings are anchored to the PRS designed wrap over bridge/tailpiece – Whilst this looks like a simple bridge, it is engineered and designed to perfection – It is a solid/milled aluminium block that is mounted on to a pair of chunky brass studs, to optimise tone, sustain and harmonics – Still based on the early Gibson design, but now fine tuned to provide precise intonation and improved transmission of the string vibration through to the body, hence improved sustain – Fitted with 9’s, 10’s or 11’s with a plain 3rd string, you will have no intonation issues whatsoever
Tonal character and playing performance :- Played acoustically you’ll discover a big vibrant tone and this is always a good place to commence any test drive – A pair of PRS McCarty humbuckers sit at the heart of the tone department – Fitted with alnico magnets, plus voiced and wound to deliver fat, warm, vintage flavoured tones – The neck pick-up purrrs, whilst the bridge pick-up is wound a little hotter, to supply you with a touch more edge and bite that is so vital for lead work and clean crunch rhythm playing – A push/pull coil tap option can be found on the tone pot, that functions on both pick-ups, so now you have access to some very useful single coil flavoured tones – Whilst they are not pure 60’s Strat territory, they are still very handy for those funky disco chops, as and when you require them – However, to me and hopefully to many others, what puts this McCarty high upon another pedestal is the solid rosewood neck and fingerboard – Not only does it feel so smooth and silky, it possesses that ‘played in’ from day one feel, thanks to the natural finish of a rosewood neck with no lacquer on it – But this is just the start, as the neck contributes so much to the tone of the guitar, to produce soft warm highs that are so angelic, with less bulk in the mid range, so soothing and luxurious – To say the overall tone is full, rich and warm should give you some idea of what to expect when you get round to introducing this guitar to your amp – With clear lows, silky smooth highs, plus warm mids that possess excellent articulation, so as not to go all mushy on you, this guitar is loaded with character – It is certainly influenced by the tones of a good Les Paul, so for blues to classic rock territory you know you are going to be on a winning wicket – From sultry blues tones on the neck pick-up, to hot, yet lush lead tones on the bridge pick-up, the McCarty does not leave you wanting – On overdriven amp settings, utilise the volume pot to dial in/out subtle yet effective changes of gain, to add so much more soul, expression and emotion to your playing, without having to touch the amp or any pedal – This approach will allow you to clean up a more subtle overdriven amp setting, whilst on hi-gain amp settings, it will still dial in/out variations in gain level, so you can obtain a full on approach or something more tame – Add the fluid playing action that a PRS delivers so well and from a playing performance point of view, there is very little to dislike about this guitar
