There is nothing wrong with the classic finishes of a Strat – Mainly sunburst and olympic or vintage white – But certain colours simply look so cool and that includes surf green – So let me update you with all the information regarding this used, 2012, Fender Masterbuilt Jason Smith 63 Strat with an aged/relic surf green finish – I’ve probably sold more new and used Jason Smith Strats than any other Masterbuilder – His aged finishes are very special and capture the magic of a good old ‘un, whilst the tonal character and playing performances is more than match for the finest Strats from any era

At this stage let me update you regarding the only change this Strat has undertaken since leaving Fender – Now fitted with a set of Klein hand wound 65 pick-ups – They cost well over £250 and a total credit to this guitars tonal character – click here and check out the Klein web site – Klein has earn a glowing reputation for his special hand wound pick-ups and turned the pursuit of that true vintage tonal character into a true art form – Fender have changed their pick-ups many times from 1954 to around 1969 – Changes to the actual magnets, plus the type of wire used, has resulted in subtle but effective variations – Klein has repaired, rebuilt, studied and analysed all the finer detail of the original Fender pick-ups, so the pursuit of vintage perfection is has goal – You’ll find a few sound clips on the above web site link – This Strat now features a set of Klein hand wound 65 pick-ups – Similar to those found on SRV’s Lenny and used by Hendrix on his famous black 65 Strat, that he used at Monterey and was said to be one of his favourite Strats that he recorded many great tracks on – They are lush and so musical – Big piano lows that are clear and rounded – Transparent mids with just enough about them to add body – Shimmering highs that are clear but never shrill like – More cool and chilled than aggressive, but they can be pushed as required for a nice hint of attitude – But overall they sound big, melodic warm and ring

On clean amp settings they possess enough character to keep you entertained for hours as you delve into a few chilled out jazz flavoured chords and tasteful licks – All 5 switch settings produce warm tones that have their own place – The sweet voices of ‘Lenny’ and Little Wing  emerge from the neck pick-up – You’ll hear those infectious out of phase tones with quack, clarity and body – Whilst the bridge pick-up is melodic , warm and clear – Only a small amount of gain is required to make this Strat sing – You can add as much gain as you like and whilst it won’t let you down on such hi-gain settings, in my opinion this Strat is at its finest with a ‘less is more’  approach regarding expression – On subtle or hi-gain amp settings the volume pot works smoothly and effectively across the 5-10 range to dial in subtle variations that adds so much soul and emotion to your playing – Less gain on the amp, with the Strat on 10, or more gain on the amp, with the Strat’s volume pot  rolled back a touch, produces a different tonal character – Both have their place so try out all these variations to see how much tonal character and expression this Strat possesses – Hot lead, soft blues or jazz/fusion melodic licks, crunch rhythm, chord riffs, Texas shuffles and walking bass lines, or funky chops with snap and attack and this Strat adores them all with passion – Incredible dynamics and very responsive to your touch

I’ve been talking about the hand wound Klein pick-ups now for a while, but I always believe the first evaluation should be unplugged as it tells me so much – I’m always looking for a vibrant  acoustic character – So much so that I want to feel it and hear it – It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that ring is my motto and I’m glad to report that this is as good as it gets – Currently set-up with the trem set flat to the belly of the guitar, to further enhance the natural vibrant character, so down pitch only as and when required – Of course I can adjust as required

Playing experience : –  The thin nitro honey tint finish on the figured maple neck has been cut back  to supply you with that ‘played in’ character – So no need  to wait years for that sticky new finish to be broken in, as this Strat is just waiting to go and be played from day one – The Oval C neck profile is straight from the early 60’s vintage camp, so it feels like  good old ‘un – Instantly comfortable with just enough girth, but never fat – Now add a 10″ fingerboard radius, along with a set of medium jumbo frets and these modern tweaks ensure a user friendly playing performance, hence a slick fluid action awaits – Dig in for slow moody licks with big blues bends, or try a few flash licks and tricks and this Strat will fully support you – No choking out as your full off a few blues bends – Set up with a slinky action that is easy to handle – Of course I can adjust as required including how you wish the trem assembly to be set-up
