The big NAMM Show in LA allows guitar builders to launch new models – Yet for the Fender Custom Shop team is not so much a case of launching new models, but it allows them to create a new run of highly spec’d Limited Edition models, based on the existing classic Strat – In this case a Strat from the 1956 period with a seriously aged faded foam green nitro relic finish that looks ultra cool – So let me enlighten you with all the appropriate info regarding this Fender Custom Shop 1956 Limited Edition Relic Strat

Spec and details :-

The playing performance is really the hallmark of a Custom Shop Strat and as such you can see why many of our guitar hero’s now own, play and record them on a regular basis – The feel of the 10/56V neck profile is pure vintage, for a 50’s based Strat – Sure it has a touch of depth to it, but fat it ain’t, so rounded and comfortable plus easy to handle it is  – The honey tint nitro finish has been fully cut back for that ‘dirty worn’ appearance, hence it instantly feels ‘played in’ from day one, with none of that sticky feel you often associate with a shiny new gloss finished neck – If the feel of the neck is pure vintage based, the fingerboard is spec’d with modern upgrades that are now seen as par for the course amongst many players – Hence a 9.5″ fingerboard radius with 21 narrow jumbo 6105 frets, whilst the nitro finish is ultra thin and cut back to assist that played in character – Set up with a fluid playing action that allows intricate licks to be played so fluently -String bending is effortless and no choking out when you rip into those big blues bends – Set-up with a set of 10’s and a light fluid playing action – Off course we can fine tune and edit as required, including any adjustments that you may require to the vintage trem assembly – So to conclude, a very user friendly playing experience

Seriously aged finish :- No shortage of dings, nicks, lacquer checking and worn patches, to replicate the vibe of a 60 year old guitar that has seen plenty of action at all the best juke box joints north of Watford -An ultra thin base coat and nitro finish allows the guitar to breathe and as such even played unplugged you’ll experience a springy lively acoustic tone that still possess plenty of depth, so you can both feel and hear it ring  – Not everyone buys into the aged character, but at least you don’t have to worry about giving it the kids glove treatment and getting upset when it acquires that first nick – In this instance Fender have chosen a faded foam green finish that looks like it has faded and mellowed out from time spent in a smokey environment – I certainly think it looks ultra cool and maybe only a Strat can carry such a cool coloured finish

Tonal character :-  Pure vintage with that spanky attack, bell like chime, crisp clear highs, tight lows, transparent mids – Overall very warm and rich and loaded with soul, expression and emotion – The first test is often that acoustic un-plugged test and no reason that this Strat will let you down at this stage – Now play it through an amp that is set-up with a clean voice and you’ll hear this Strat is warm and smooth – Very angelic with sparkling highs and overall very melodic – The neck pick-up is open with big piano lows that aren’t muddy, whilst the bridge pick-up can bite without sounding harsh and brittle, whilst still loaded with enough muscle to add girth and depth – Position 2+4 deliver totally infectious ‘out of phase’ quack tones – Some Strats can sound thin and weedy at this stage, whereas this Strat is so melodic and musical – More depth from the middle/neck combination and more snap from the bridge/middle combination – It would be so easy to stay on this two settings all the time – Note at this stage the middle pick-up is RWRP so position 2+4 are silent

Now add some gain on the amp – With more of a subtle classic rock/blues overdriven amp setting, you’ll find that with the Strat’s volume pot on or around 6/7, it is a great place to set-up base camp – It still retains all the guitars expressive character, but now with more of a chilled out cleaner voice – As such when you require a touch more gain and edge, wind the pot back towards 10 for the full on turbo approach – Play around with this combination on all 5 switch settings and you’ll quickly discover how much soul and emotion is available to you – As such you and the guitar totally control the amp   – Now add more gain as required and still utilise the volume pot in the same way  – With increased gain you can’t  back it off to very clean, but you can still control the level of gain from full on with bite and edge, to more chilled out – Interesting to note that with  more of a subtle overdriven amp setting and the Strat on 10, compared to a hi-gain overdriven amp setting and the Strat backed off to around 6 or 7, there is still a  different level of gain and tonal character – As such you’ll find it interesting to explore all the varied levels of emotion that is packed into this Strat – It is this level of tonal character and expression that makes this such a highly desirable Strat
