About Dean Guitars:
Which ever way you look at it Dean make some extra special guitars - When your list of clients includes Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, Leslie West, The Schenker Brothers, Rik Emmett, ZZ Top and more recently Zakk Wylde, you know you have a reputation in the rock market - The USA models are built by a small team of around 10 highly skilled luthiers, with each guitar taking around 6 weeks to be crafted to perfection -
What's more is that only a small handful ever get shipped to the UK shores each year, so aren't we the lucky ones - As Dean Zelinsky says "we offer high end guitars made for the sophisticated tastes of
today's discerning guitar players and we are dedicated to exceptional quality, creative designs coupled with perfect balance, tone and playability - In the late 1970's Dean adverts raised the testosterone levels with with scantily clad models, today those levels are raised just by playing such a well balanced delightful instrument.
Dean USA Hardtail: First of all I would like to make one simple statement and that is that the USA Hardtail is much more than just an out and out rock beast - With the right amp it is just as at home in a jazz/blues/fusion outfit and in a more traditional classic rock environment, but I'll bet your bottom dollar that the Hardtail will spend most of its life playing rock - The selection of the woods is of great importance to Dean which enables them to produce such wonderful instruments, both for cosmetic purposes and for deliverying the ultimate tone - In this case that unique top is spalted maple, which is far more individual than regular flamed maple tops - The mahogany body is neatly contoured and a bit slimmer than say a Les Paul, more like a PRS Custom 22/24, so the whole guitar weighs in at a lightish 7lbs 4oz - The mahogany neck is quarter sawn and topped of with an ebony fingerboard, so PRS fans who desire a stop tail model and ebony fingerboard but find that is not possible with any PRS model, take a close look at the Dean Hardtail - The fingerboard is impeccably fitted with 22 jumbo frets and nicely embellished with abalone inlays, whilst the 12 fret has a special abalone and silver inlay - The satin hardware is all top notch, with a Tonepros tune-o-matic bridge and a Dean Cadilac tailpiece, which is fixed straight to the body for improved sustain - A set of Satin Grover tuners complete the hardware, whilst the tone is provided by a pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers, again with satin finished covers - So now to the guitars playing and tonal performance - You get a 24.75" scale length with a nut width of 1 11/16" and a neck profile that sits somewhere between a PRS wide/thin and a wide/fat that is oh so comfortable with a playing action that can be soooooo low and fast - For guitar players into a high level of notes per second, then this guitar has to be checked out as it is so easy and fluid to play, with easy access up to the top end of the fingerboard, where only the brave and the talented go - For more traditional blues/rock based players, slap on a set of 10's and see how comfortable it suits you with effortless and controlled string bending - As mentioned before this is not just the ultimate rock tool as with a cleaner based amp, the rich full and creamy smooth tones will appeal to jazz/fusion and blues based players with tones that just shimmer and come alive - But for rock this stands up with the best of them and wakes up the neighborhood and slaps you right in the face - Its bone crushing with so many overtones, whilst pinched harmonics have never been so easy to find - You get great definition and good note separation even on heavy gain amp settings - Yet the beast can be tamed for more traditional classic rock paf flavoured tones that just purr - This USA Hardtail Exotica model has a regular list price of £2,569 including a deluxe case.
